Dublin has become only the fourth city in the world to be named a UNESCO City of Literature. The designation was announced on Monday, 26th July by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Gerry Breen, who said
I am absolutely delighted about this achievement – which confirms what Dubliners have known for years – this is a city that has always produced, and continues to produce, great writers.
A number of well known Irish writers, such as Joseph O'Connor, Thomas Kinsella, Claire Kilroy, Hugo Hamilton, Peter Sirr, Aubrey Flegg and Anne Enright were present at the announcement. Minister for Culture Mary Hanafin noted that the designation was
a great recognition of the vast literary wealth for which we are renowned and will be a welcome boost for cultural tourism.
